     Grow Wheat and Barley Grass

Well done on your decision to grow health grass!

Wheat / Barley Grass Growing Instructions

  • Use a shallow food safe ceramic bowl with three or more drainage holes in the bottom of the container. Fill it with 1 or 2cm of compost or good soil.
  • Place in a saucer or shallow container.
  • Cover the soil with boiling water so that it is thoroughly wet.
  • Wait for the sand to cool. (about 10 minutes)
  • Sprinkle the seed over the sand. (Seeds can be touching and overlapping.)
  • Gently push the seeds into the soil.
  • Place the container in a light place: somewhere you can see it.
  • Make sure the seed does not dry out.

    Wait and Observe.

  • After about 24 hours you should see a white sprout from one end of the seed
  • After 48 hours you should see roots developing.
  • In 3 to 4 days you should see green vertical stems of the grass

    Harvesting

  • Pick or cut your grass when it is about 6 or 7cm high.
  • Rinse and eat the green grass fresh.
  • You can also use a food dryer to dry the grass. Once dry, crush or grind it to make wheat grass tea. Dried and ground, it can be stored for up to three months in the freezer.

  •  How do I help my bones to heal and be healthy?

    • Reduce my protein intake to 0.75g per kilogram of body weight. (Over consumption of protein stresses calcium in teeth and bones.)
    • Make sure my protein is from plants, nuts and seeds.
    • Take no caffeine e.g. coffee, tea, chocolate. (Changes PH - stresses bones and teeth.)
    • No drinks except natural home fermented herbal teas i.e Kombucha.
    • Avoid processed foods. E.g. Most purchased wheat products come out of your body with more nutrients than when they when in.
    • Eat fermented green leafy plants. e.g. Barley, wheat grass, cabbage, spinach.
    • Do mild weight bearing exercise in morning sunlight. (Sun on the kidney area starts a chemical process that involves most of the major organs.)
    • Use no artificial light after dark. (Interferes with melatonin.)
    • Breath this "sound" scale often. ee - yaa oo uu - wee. (in - out out out - in.)
    • Laugh and play while doing works of service. (A merry heart does good like a medicine.)

How do I ferment my food.

    Fermented Barley Tea

  • Use 2 tbl spoons dried and crushed, young, pull picked barley grass.
  • Cover with hot water
  • Allow to cool to about 40-50 deg. C.
  • Add probiotics (from any chemist or vet).
  • Cover and wrap in a towel.
  • Leave in the dark for about 12 hours. (If the probiotic contains Acidophilus it should smell like real yoghurt.)
  • Uncover and allow to dry, completely, in the sun.
  • Add warm water. (First boil the water and allowed to cool to about 40-50 deg. C.)
  • Eat 90% of the grass, drink the water.
  • Use the remaining 10% to ferment the next batch of tea or feed to compost worms.

How do I make rice milk / yoghurt
I use digestive enzymes to ferment rice to produce a type of rice yoghurt.

  • Add the enzymes to a pot of cooked rice, at room temperature, and let it stand overnight.
  • Mash the rice and add a 2-4 tablespoons of Probiotic powder.

Use the yoghurt as a base for the other milk seeds, using the "milk" as a topping on cereal. Lasts about 4-5 days in the fridge.

  • You can also use Kefir to ferment seeds.
I got my Kefir starter grains and Kombucha scoby from Paul Barker. Paul gives seminars and courses on permaculture.

Note: Don't use plastic containers to soak or sprout your seed.
